Emma Wolfe Highlights
Tell us about your background, bio. Where are you now in your professional journey?
I am a rising senior at Pennsylvania State University in the College of Education studying Secondary Education: Social Studies and in the College of Liberal Arts studying History. I am also pursuing two minors, one in Special Education and one in Jewish Studies along with a certificate in Genocide and Holocaust Studies. This upcoming year, I am preparing to start my student teaching placement and I am very excited to tell the stories of history to students. Besides being a college student on a career path to becoming a history teacher, I grew up playing competitive fastpitch softball which allowed me to travel the East Coast to amazing cities and places.
Why did you apply to an internship at the Columbus Chapel & Boal Mansion Museum?
This summer I was really looking for an internship that would combine my background in education and my background in history and the Columbus Chapel and Boal Mansion Museum gave me the avenue to do both at the same time. I was so drawn to putting together educational materials for the museum to use and distribute to local schools that when the position was offered to me, I could not wait to accept it and begin this journey to help others.
What have been some of the highlights or most unique experiences of your internship so far?
One of the most unique highlights of my internship at the Museum so far has been my idea for a public exhibition coming to life. When I had thought of the idea to display the fashion of the property, I really did not think it would get to the point of becoming an actual event but I cannot wait to share all my research and knowledge. It is definitely my #1 highlight at this point and I cannot wait to see the end product and all my hard work come to life on August 7th.
What are some of your goals this summer in your role at the museum?
My main goal is to put together a history curriculum focused on the history of the Chapel and Museum for local schools to use and grow their student's knowledge of local and world history. Some other goals of mine are working with the archive team to organize the vast history within the museum and put together a professional exhibition for the public to view. While those are my three large goals I am constantly working on smaller goals like becoming a docent.
What advice would you give future interns at the Boal Mansion Museum?
My biggest piece of advice to future interns is to not be afraid to speak up, whether it's about ideas or questions there is always someone there to help find an answer or listen to an idea. Also, you can make this internship as personal as you want so find something that you're really interested in and focus on it.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years? How might your internship experience this summer be a stepping stone to that future?
While I am very aware that in 5 years I could be doing something completely different than what I am thinking now, there are a few things I feel sure of. In 5 years, I definitely see myself in a classroom somewhere teaching history and social studies to children while also pursuing a Master's degree to further my education. This internship is a huge stepping stone in my professional career because it puts me on the path of public history and learning to adapt lessons and materials to local history, something that is super important to build connections in an individual's understanding of the history around them.
