Visiting the historic Gettysburg Battlefield
In July 1863, the greatest battle ever in America took place in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Known as "the high water mark of the Confederacy," the battle pitted Confederate General Robert E. Lee (a cousin of Christopher Lee's ancestor, Union admiral Samuel Phillips Lee) against newly named Union General George Meade. In three days soome 50,000 soldiers died and the South lost the battle and ultimately the war. The battlefield is now a national park.
