Highlight Boalsburg Birthday Weekend
(Boalsburg, PA) - Boalsburg will celebrate the birthday of the historic village in 1808 and of America itself in 1492 with a free festival and an elegant, but expensive, ball on October 6 and 5th respectively.
The Sunday, October 6, festival from Noon to 4 pm in the village square will feature free wagon rides through the historic village and a musical slate unparalleled in the community. The Tommy Wareham Trio from the American Ale House, virtuoso harpist Richard Sleigh, keyboardist John “JT Blues” Thompson of the AAA Blues Band, Maxwell Straight and the Gill Street Band and violinist and guitarist Bruce Young will all perform in the square.
John Thompson will also join a cast of dozens to present the local history by bringing to life historical characters including, in period dress, Christopher Columbus and the pioneer David Boal as well as Thompson’s ancestor Moses Thompson, one of the principle founders of Penn State University and owner of the Centre Furnace Mansion.
America’s 1492 birthday has special, unexpected significance in Boalsburg, where the Columbus Chapel at the Boal Estate is the strongest link in the United States with the famed explorer. Boal descendants of Columbus inherited and imported the chapel in 1909, including an Admiral’s Desk that belonged to Columbus, European fine religious paintings and statues and two pieces of the True Cross of Jesus.
The Columbus Chapel and Boal Mansion Museum will have special hours during the Sunday festival, Noon to 5 pm. Regular hours are 1:30 to 5 pm six days a week (closed Mondays) through the end of the season on October 31. School and bus group tours are possible in the winter by advance arrangement.
The Columbus connection will receive special attention at the Saturday, October 5, Boalsburg Columbus Ball at the Boal Mansion, where guests will sip champagne, gnosh on abundant hors d’oeuvres from the region’s top restaurants and dance the Virginia reel to Bruce Young’s band, Smashing Windows. While the Sunday festival is free, tickets to the Saturday ball are $100 and benefit historic preservation and heritage education at the Boal Estate.
The weekend concludes Monday morning with an invitation-only religious service in the Columbus Chapel celebrated by Father Matthew Baum of Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in State College and served by the Knights of Columbus.
