Lot 1, sold for $11 by Andrew Stroup in 1809, was purchased in 1826 by John Hess for $30. He built the house that year from bricks made in the back yard. Unchanged (until 2014, when a rear addition was made) except for addition of a front porch, its foundation joists are hand-hewn timbers, walls are 13 inches thick, some floorboards are as much as 15 inches wide, and original wall plaster is will well preserved. Door latches, wide-paneled doors, window frames and open staircase are all hand-made. The house was occupied continuously by the builder’s descendants, and was the residence of Mrs Ida Leiby and her sister, Miss Rachel Segner, until they sold it in 1984.
