    Born in MD around 1706. Frontier guide and friend of George Washington. He was the first to survey the Ohio River valley in 1751. He was George Washinton's guide on the way to Ft. LeBoeuf and saved him from drowning on the way back.
    As captain of a company of scouts, Gist fought under Gen. Edward Braddock at Fort Duquesne in 1755 during the French and Indian wars. Later he became an Indian agent in eastern Tennessee.
