Dear Neighbors:

The Boalsburg Village Conservancy (BVC) serves Boalsburg and the entire Harris Township community in many diverse ways. Our mission is to help to preserve the historical resources of Boalsburg Village and Harris Township and to stimulate awareness of and interest in this area’s historic past. Our newsletter details some of the ways we do this and the community organizations we nourish. We hope you will enjoy reading about what’s happening and what’s coming up, and will want to join in the fun!

You can support the Conservancy in its efforts simply by sending a contribution—use the membership form below—and by coming to the annual meeting (see above). Or you can lend your intellect and muscle to any number of events and groups. Or all of the above! If an activity captures your interest, just email the person who wrote the article.

Many people who work in State College and live in Harris Township, when asked where they live, reply “Boalsburg.” It’s a beautiful village in a fine township, both kept that way by people like you who care. We hope to see you or hear from you soon!

Sincerely yours,

Christopher Lee,

President, Boalsburg Village Conservancy

The Boalsburg Village Conservancy

The Boalsburg Village Conservancy was founded in 1973. You can join in! See the information below.

Since the distinctive character of the village of Boalsburg in Harris Township, Centre County, Pennsylvania, reflects the area's rich historical heritage, the purpose of the Boalsburg Village Conservancy is

1.     to help in preserving the historical resources of Boalsburg Village and Harris Township and

2.     to stimulate awareness of and interest in this area's historic past.

Soon after its founding that, the Conservancy took over the administration of the annual Boalsburg Memorial Day Service from the Township.

The Conservancy founded the Day in Towne Memorial Day festival in 1974.  This festival annually attracts up to 20,000 people to Boalsburg Village, the Boal Mansion and the Pennsylvania Military Museum with food, music and crafts. The Conservancy founded the present community Memorial Day Committee in 1978 and names its chairperson each year.

In the mid-1970's the Conservancy led the effort to rezone the center of the Boalsburg Village from Commercial to Village District, a mix of residential and commercial uses consistent with the historic character of the Village.

In 1976, the Conservancy organized the Harris Township celebration of America's Bicentennial.

Above: Christopher Lee reads the Declaration of Independence in 1976 on the diamond in Boalsburg for America's Bicentennial.  Chris is a descendant of Richard Henry Lee of Virginia, who offered the motion in Congress on June 7, 1776, that became the Declaration of Independence.

The Conservancy founded the Boalsburg Heritage Museum as a separate non-profit organization in 1982.

Above: Early days of the Boalsburg School (top) and the Boal Band (bottom).

At present, the Conservancy is organizing a celebration of the bicentenary of Boalsburg's founding in 1808.

Anyone who is interested in their community and in the objectives of the Conservancy is eligible for membership, regardless of age or place of residence.

To join as a member, send a check to "Boalsburg Village Conservancy" for $15 annual membership, $30 family membership or $300 life membership to:

When sending your membership donation, please indicate what special events or activities sponsored by the Conservancy (see below) you are interested in helping out with or if you would like to be a volunteer tour guide in the village or at one of Boalsburg's museums (see below).

Larger donations or bequests to the Conservancy are always welcome to help accomplish the above-stated purpose. The Boalsburg Village Conservancy is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit corporation. Donations are fully tax-deductible.
